Sous le nom de In Betweens, ces vétérans du mouvement beat de Manchester se forgèrent un style progressif, notamment dans un certain nombre de chansons corr posées par Lea et Holder. Mais comme leur reprise de "You Bet Run" des Young Rascals ne fut j un succès, le groupe devint Ambrose Slade pour l'album de 1969, Genesis.
Chas Chandler (ex-Animal devint leur manager et, sur ses seils, ils raccourcirent leur nom adoptèrent un look skinhead. Leur reprise de "Get Down And Get Witl It" de Little Richard termina dans les Top 20 britanniques en 1971, suivi par leur propre "Coz 1 LuV You", qui grimpa au sommet des charts. Le groupe adopta un nouveau look glam-rock et, grâce à la voix exubérante de Holder, connut trois années fastes. En 1973, "Cum On Feel The Noize" leur permit de devenir le premier groupe à se classer directement au sommet des charts, après les Beatles.
Le groupe traversa une courte période calme vers 1975 jusqu'à la sortie de We'll Bring The tiouse Down, EP du bruyant concert de Slade au festival de Reading en 1980, qui leur permit de remonter dans les Top 10.1983 et 1984 fure des millésimes particulièrement bons et "Run Run Away" fut l'oc sion d'une courte percée aux Etat Unis. Depuis, la carrière de Slade irrégulière, bien que Merry Xmas Everybody, sorti en 1973, soit rééc tous les ans.
